Australia accepts applications for citizenship by conferral where the applicant is:
A permanent resident
Is of good moral character
has spent at least the last 4 years in Australia before applying with at least one of these years being as a permanent resident
Meets the residence requirement – Has not travelled for more than 12 months out of the previous 4 years before applying, including no more than 3 months in the last 12 months before application.
There are a number of exemptions to the resident requirement for senior executives, sports persons and spouses of Australians.
Citizenship by Decent
Children born to or adopted by an Australian national overseas can apply for citizenship by decent.
If the child’s parent obtained citizenship by decent themselves that parent must have spent at least 2 years in Australia prior to the child’s application for citizenship.
